The Conference
Friday, June 7 - Full day and 2 day workshops #101C Betty Pillsbury, Beginning Crazy Quilting The 2nd
half of the 2-day workshop started on Thurs.,June 6. #202 Debbie Boyink, Needle Tatted Beaded Purse Needle
tat a beautiful beaded purse to wear around your neck. It's just the
right size for carrying your ID and credit cards when going to quilt
shows. Learn to add beads to your tatted rings, make chains of bead
that form most of the purse, and to make a fringe of beaded loops for
the bottom. To wear the purse around your neck, you will make an
attractive twisted neck cord, which can incorporate beads.
***This is a day and a 1/2 workshop. The 2nd half will be on Sunday,
June 9 at 9:00 a.m. Kit fee: $8-$45, depending on the bead choice. #203 Martha Green, Armchair Pincushion Students will
choose from several variations of pincushions. Using techniques from
Martha's "Carney Roadside Attraction School of Crazy Quilting," they
will construct these pincushions which when weighted will ride easily
on the arm of a sofa or chair. Students will learn how it is possible
to turn small units of crazy quilting into pincushions and appliqués.
Martha will demonstrate her method of quick piecing, construction,
beading ideas and embellishing. Kit Fee: $5.00 #204 Robin Atkins, Improvisational Bead Embroidery a
2-day workshop-In 2 days, learn and create a sampler of every basic bead
embroidery technique there is, plus many variations, fringe techniques
and edging methods. Begin beading on a piece of original work which you
can make into a small pouch, appliqué onto a large bag, frame, add to a
quilt, or whatever you wish. Kit fee: $5.00 #205 J.D. Shumway, Crazy Pieced Miniature Art Quilts
Explore the techniques of miniature crazy piecing and embellishment
while constructing these tiny masterpieces. The miniature blocks have
lots of little spaces for the teeny-tiniest embroidery stitches possible.
A variety of design and finishing possibilities will be covered,
including framing the blocks as fine art. All skill levels welcomed.

one delightful day with Gloria, learn to create a beautiful and
functional needlecase, using an elegant embellished silk panel for the
cover. Each page is embroidered and embellished with silk ribbon and
laces to add to the charm of this beautiful project. Kit fee: $21.00 #207 Karen Williams, Alternate Landscape Piecing Method
Create beautiful blocks with graceful, curved seams. This piecing method
is both faster and easier than the traditional landscape piecing methods.
Students will create a landscape incorporating such terrain features as
hills, clouds, farm fields, rocks, etc. Kit fee: $12.50 #208 Kelly Gallagher-Abbott, Start to Finish Students
may choose to work on a crazy quilted fabric postcard or a project of
their own. Fabric selection, foundation piecing, seam coverings, beading
and finishing are all presented. Kit fee: $10.00 Friday Half Day Workshops - A. M. #209 Kathy Fenchel, Flutterby for Lunch Students will be
introduced to the basics of stumpwork. They will stitch a three-
dimensional beaded butterfly passing over a thistle, looking for just
the right morsel for lunch. Three specific stumpwork techniques are used.
This is an intermediate level class. Students should be comfortable with
basic embroidery stitches including bullion knots and the buttonhole
stitch. Kit fee: $15.00 #210 Victoria Adams Brown4" Woven Needlebook Students
will make a 4" woven front needlebook using curly ribbon, buttons and a
few lazy daisy leaves, feather stitches, and beads. Kit fee: $12.00 #211 Roxann O'Hare, Hand-dyed Ribbons Students will
hand dye and paint a variety of ribbons, threads, and trims that can be
incorporated into crazy quilting. Silk, cotton and rayon will be provided
and students may bring some of their favorites to try as well.
Experimentation is encouraged! Kit fees: $25.00 #212 Cindy Brick,Hanky Crazy Quilt Use 7-10 of your
favorite hankies and an unusual "out-in" stitching method to make a
lovely heirloom Crazy Quilt. Fast, beautiful and do-able for all levels
of expertise. Students will discuss a variety of easy-to-add
embellishments for a graceful finished look, including beading, painted
shadings, and others. All methods demonstrated in class, including
finishing methods. Kit fee: $26.00 Friday Half Day Workshops - P. M. #213 Kathy Fenchel, Raspberries for Lunch Students will
stitch a small design that is a nice introduction into stumpwork. A fat
bumblebee is hovering over three glistening raspberries. Three specific
stumpwork techniques will be used. This is an intermediate level class;
students should be comfortable with stitching bullion knots, buttonhole
stitch and French knots. Kit fee: $15.00 #214 Victoria Adams Brown, Button Bouquet Students will
learn how to stack buttons and create "button towers." Learn how to
create "S" curve patterns with buttons and button placement on top of
motifs. Make fuzzy rayon flowers inside buttons, wrap buttons with rayon
fibers and add beads. Create button flowers by stitching decorative
stitches around a button. Kit Fee: $12.00 Friday Half Day Workshops - P. M. #215 Roxann O'Hare, Easy Imaging This class is for
those who want to transfer images and hand paint with no fuss involved.
Easily accomplished at home with no mess and non toxic techniques.
Students will start with black and white photocopies, transfer to cotton
and silk fabric and then hand paint the images using dyes. Kit fee: $25.00 #216 Cindy Brick, Color Fabric Embellishments Give your
Crazy Quilts that professional look with the tricks and tips you'll pick
up from this learn-as-you-work class; everything from the right fabrics
and colors to adding that final touch of embroidery or beading . Students
will explore both modern quick pieced and traditional methods and examine
a variety of modern and vintage Crazies. Kit fee: $20, optional High Tea-5:00-7:00 p.m. The popularity of Martha Green's doll
class last year prompted the addition of a tea hosted by Martha and the
participants of that class. Please bring your completed dolls so that we
may admire them. There's just enough time between the end of class and
the beginning of tea to slip back over to the hotel and change into some
CQ finery. Scholarship Auction-7:00-9:00 p.m. Always an important part of
the Conference, the scholarship auction will be held immediately
following High Tea. Please consider donating something to the auction-
some crazy quilt blocks, a goodie bag of fabrics, ribbons, and
embellishments, or perhaps the Challenge Block that you made for the
Anniversary Challenge. Proceeds from the auction fund the scholarships
which allow people to attend the conference for reduced tuition. Saturday, June 8 Full Day Workshops #204 Robin Atkins, Improvisational Bead Embroidery the
2nd half of the 2-day workshop started on Friday, June 7. #301 Betty Pillsbury, Crazy Embroidery Learn variations of
classic crazy quilt stitches such as twisted herringbone, tied
herringbone, triple feather, maidenhair, etc. Learn why the chant,
"Shoulder, shoulder, bellybutton" will help you stitch better. Kit Fee:$10.00 #302 Debbie Boyink, Needle Tatted Motifs and Techniques
Add excitement to your needle tatted rings. Make a simple motif when
learning to make chains between the rings. Learn to use two colors in
your tatting. Students will learn how to add beads to motifs after
learning several techniques for adding beads.Kit fee: $2-$5, depending on
beads and threads selected. #303 Martha Green, Gaining Momentum Martha gives tips
from the "Carney Roadside Attraction School of Crazy Quilting." This
class is designed to provide helpful hints for quilters who would like
to finish a full-size crazy quilt before they die or just complete
smaller items faster. Martha will demonstrate a quick piecing method and
discuss ways to speed up your working process. You will work on piecing
four blocks using her method which may be used later in a project. Kit
Fee: $5.00 #304 Kathy Fenchel, Ladybug Luncheon This project
exposes the student to five separate stumpwork techniques. The design is
stitched on ivory Dupioni silk. Students will stitch a three dimensional
ladybug meandering on a vine looking for lunch. The ladybug and leaf are
stitched using wire and floss. The yellow berries have a muslin base and
the thistles are three dimensional and shaded. This is an intermediate
level stitching class; students should be comfortable with basic
embroidery stitches including French knots and the buttonhole stitch.

Embellishing Silk Prints - Gloria McKinnon-In one wonderful day, students
can make a fabulous, heavily embellished bellpull. Using four cherub silk
panels, beautiful fabrics, elegant laces and antique style buttons, they
will create a delightful piece to grace their homes. Kit fee:$58.00 #307 Kelly Gallagher-Abbott, Perfect Seam Coverings
Students will learn an easy and fast way to create perfect seam
coverings. Students will work on a sampler and learn the basics to every
stitch used in seam coverings. They can practice endless variations.
Also covered will be couching and short/long stitch so that students
will learn to create the traditional Victorian spider and web. Kit fee:
$10 #308 Victoria Adams Brown, Denim Shirt Sampler This
class will feature 8 different stitches. Students will stitch on the
back of denim shirts and embellish the yokes with Rayon Flutterbees.
Charms will be added and the front of the shirt yokes will also be
embellished with motifs and buttons. Kit fee: $15.00 #309 Kerri Murphy, Crazy Bead Embroidery Learn
techniques for bead embroidery that create a dimensional look and which
can be used alone or in combination with traditional crazy quilt
embroidery stitches. Students can make a block ahead of time to
embroider or they can use plain fabric squares for a sampler. They may
also use their own project. Kit fee: $15.00 Saturday Half Day Workshops A.M. #310 Mary Richling, Photo Transfer Students will learn
several different methods of photo transfer and the pros and cons of each
method. This class will include ideas on what to transfer and types of
fabrics and the range of effects that can be achieved with the various
methods. Kit Fee: $5.00 (optional) #311 Jo Morton, Framing Students will learn framing
jargon and conservation framing recommendations in this demonstration
based class. An informative step by step demonstration of how to frame
needlework will give you helpful insights that will enable you to frame
your own needlework or choose a framer to do the work for you the way
you want the work done. Kit Fee: None #312 Karen Williams, Working with Color Identify your
color biases and expand beyond those biases to work with a rainbow
palette of vibrant (or subtle) color combinations with confidence.
Karen draws on her art background to provide a thorough look at the
properties of hue, value, and intensity, and how to actually USE color
theory to plan exciting color combinations that work. Each student will
start a color reference workbook to use as a "jumpstart" in planning
future projects. Bring along samples of your favorite colors, or some
colors you've wanted to work with, but had trouble using in the past.
Kit Fee: $15.00 Saturday, Half Day Workshops P. M. #313 Cindy Thury Smith, Sashing, Setting and Block Shape Options
for Crazy Quilts Learn several shape options that are easy to
crazy piece. Then learn different simple to construct variations for
sashing your crazy pieced blocks together plus different settings to
highlight your design. Learn how to cut filler shapes, how to stabilize
your work, how to add borders that stay square and how to construct so
your piece hangs straight. A technique for setting together blocks of
unequal sizes will also be presented. Class will include exercises plus
many handouts. #314 Jo Morton, Framing See #311 - do not register for both
sessions. #315 Karen Williams, Ribbon Worked Flowers A veritable
spring garden of beautiful flowers will burst into bloom under your
fingertips. We'll use ombre, organdy, gross grained, and wire-edged
ribbons to create baby rosettes and violets, berry buds, lilies of the
valley, pansies, leaves, and of course, rose buds and roses. These
beauties are sewn onto buckram, creating movable, floral embellishments.

Crazy Quilt finery and join us for a banquet that is surely to become a
yearly favorite. Gloria McKinnon will be the keynote speaker. We top off
