FRIDAY JULY 11

CINDY BRICK
HANKY PANKY II: HANDKERCHIEF QUILTS REVISITED

Based on Cindy's popular books, Hanky Panky Crazy Quilts (ASN) and her upcoming Hanky Panky with A Flourish. What can you do with that collection of old hankies? Make a variety of quilts, including butterfly, angel, ‘fabulous frame,’ baskets…and of course, the bestselling original Hanky Panky method. Cindy has learned new tricks on using your hankies for quilts – without cutting them up! A variety of kits in all colors and styles will be available; KIT PRICE $25.95, including 7 handkerchiefs, lace, embellishments and a fabric transfer. Or bring your own hankies, or buy them from merchants at the vendor mall. (E-mail Cindy at cindybrick@comcast.net for a full supply list, including kit description.)

You will also need general sewing supplies, as well as rotary cutter and mat. Hand methods are fine, especially for the basic Hanky Panky method. You can also bring a machine to make faster progress on some of the “Flourish” variations.

KAREN BRISTOW
VICTORIAN EMBELLISHED SHADOW BOX

Create an elegant and distinctive heirloom shadowbox using a kit which includes hand-dyed lace, a Victorian style image on silk, various ribbons, beads and lace and the copyrighted pattern. Techniques you learn will include various ribbon work flowers and applications and beading to complete your masterpiece. The shadow box itself is a high quality wooden box, is lined and roomy enough to store jewelry or other treasures. The box measures 8 ½" x 11" x 4 ¼" deep. Karen will teach the finishing techniques to complete the project when you get home. Bring a pair of scissors. Everything else you need is in your kit -- $65 kit fee.

MARTHA GREEN
ARTIST QUILT TRADING CARDS

Martha is an award-winning fiber artist from Oklahoma City who works in crazy quilts. This class will focus on making Artist Trading Cards. We will discuss four different approaches to the process so hopefully there will be a technique for everyone. These cards are wonderful ways to experiment with design and try out new ideas. They have the great advantage of acting as currency for trades to gather goods and other trading cards. This is a great way to share your art with others. Martha will also show you how the techniques used in class may be parlayed into postcards, pins and other art objects. Small lab fee.

SHERRILL LEWIS
A DRAGONFLY IN MY GARDEN
- Create a beaded dragonfly visiting a beaded garden. This can become a patch in a crazy quilt or used in another project or simply framed. You will learn some special breading tricks and tips in this class for beginning and intermediate beaders. You should be able to complete the dragonfly, and learn all the techniques you will need to complete the garden when you get home. Bring scissors and an Ott light -- everything else is supplied in the $25 kit including beads, neeedles, thread, background fabric and a special beading mat which you get to take home.

SATURDAY, JULY 12

CINDY BRICK
IT’S NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT SEEMS: THE SURPRISING HISTORY OF CRAZY QUILTS

Cindy fell in love with Crazy quilts and their history more than a decade ago. Her new book Crazy Quilts from Voyageur Press has been up and down the Amazon bestseller list since its publication in February of this year . Bring your curiosity and creativity and learn techniques, motifs and design principles from Victorian times. But this isn’t just a lecture. You will have the chance to create patches, images and both modern and antique methods… including a Crazy-patched block that can be finished in 10 minutes! Cindy’s book will be used as a resource, but purchase is not required. Patterns provided. (E-mail Cindy at cindybrick@comcast.net for a full supply list; the Flora and Fauna kit can also be used for this class.)

You will also need general sewing supplies; a rotary cutter and mat are recommended, as well as a good sharp mechanical pencil or blue washout marking pen. Hand methods are fine for class, or accomplish even more with your sewing machine.

MARTHA GREEN
RAISED FLOWERS

In this class you will learn to create raised flowers in the Victorian tradition. We will explore making many different flowers that will be made from fabric, felt, & ribbons. These flowers may be combined, and embellished and will add a third dimension to your art projects. The felt flowers are easy and simple to make but once embellished become quite elaborate. These lovely little flowers will make a beautiful addition to any crazy quilt project. Kit Fee.

SUSAN MOREHOUSE
MOUNTAIN COLUMBINE SILK RIBBON PILLOW

Susan's original design of mountain columbines will make a beautiful pillow or can be incoporated into a crazy quilt. You will learn a number of silk ribbon embroidery stitches, and can finish the pillow top in class. You will get instructions for finishing the pillow when you get home.

CINDY THURY SMITH
PINCUSHIONS PLUS

Pincushions can be plain, fancy and collectible! Cindy will present a slide show of various styles of pincushions through the ages. Options for filling and stuffing will be covered. Cindy will guide you through making a variety of pin cushions. You will get patterns for five classic pin cushion styles and should be able to complete at least three of them in class. Bring a variety of needles, sewing thread and miscellaneous embellishments to add to your creations. Supply fee of $10.00 to the teacher includes supplies for several pincushions plus partial supplies for others .

SUNDAY, JULY 13

CINDY BRICK
FLORA & FAUNA: FLOWERS AND ANIMALS FROM YOUR CRAZY LIFE

Cindy will introduce you to favorite ways to interpret flowers, animals and even birds and bugs on Crazy quilts. Along the way, we’ll visit the secret Language of Flowers; the symbolism of animals, birds and insects to quilters; and special techniques to imitate petals, fur and feathers. Plenty of examples, old and new, to give you inspiration. Then create your own secret messages and memories, using the pattern provided, or add to your current project.

Pattern will make a small wallhanging or pillow, and you’ll need fabric scraps, ½ yard muslin or another base, needles and general sewing tools, and your choice of embellishments. (E-mail Cindy at cindybrick@comcast.net for a full supply list, including kit description.) Kits are also available for $19.95, including everything you need, plus some extra charms, buttons and a fabric transfer ready to use.

You will also need general sewing supplies; a rotary cutter and mat are recommended, as well as a good sharp mechanical pencil or blue washout marking pen. Hand methods are fine for class, or accomplish even more with your sewing machine.

MARTHA GREEN
GAINING MOMENTUM

In this class Martha will give tips from her style of crazy quilting. She will share techniques she has developed over 30 years of crazy quilting experience. This class is designed to provide helpful hints for quilters who would like to finish a full-sized crazy quilt before they die or just want to complete smaller items faster. Martha will demonstrate her quick piecing method and discuss ways to speed up your work process. In class students will piece at least 4 crazy quilt blocks using the “Carney” method. Machines needed, but we will try to have some loaner machines on hand for those who are flying in. Small lab fee.

CINDY THURY SMITH
BEAUTIFUL BORDERS AND ELEGANT EDGES

Learn a variety of techniques for finishing your crazy quilts to create the perfect final frame around your quilt. The class includes a slide presentation showing the beautiful borders on many antique crazy quilts. Learn how to frame your crazy quilt with several bordering options (piano key, prairie braid, free hanging fan borders) and add effective edges to your quilt (ruffles, lace, prairie points and twisted cording edges). Slide show plus paper exercises plus stitching demos.

Students are encouraged to bring a crazy pieced top for in-class suggestions. The remainder of class will be actually attaching four types of borders to a sample piece (see supply list). If you want to try the hanging fan border, be sure to download the PDF file with the supply list -- you'll have some homework to do before class. If you can bring a machine with you, please do -- this will speed things along. We will have some loaner machines to share.

LYNN TOLLES
BAUBLES, BANGLES AND BEADS

And because more is never enough…we’ll learn lots of ways to embellish these embellishments. Whatever your style, you’ll find special new ways to fashion wonderful, one-of-a-kind beads and charms to exactly match and decorate your projects! Kit available.
